 * Lohri was earlier called Tilodi.  The word is derived from a combination of the words til and rhodi (jaggery), which changed over time to become famous as Lohri.  Eating and distributing sesame and jaggery is also important on the day of Makar Sankranti.  In many areas of Punjab, it is also called Lohi or Loi.  Like the Vaisakhi festival, Lohri is related to the village, crop and weather of Punjab.  Radish and sugarcane crop is sown from this day.  Before this, the Rabi crop is cut and kept in the house.  Mustard flowers are seen waving in the fields.

 Mythological belief

 * According to mythological belief, this festival is celebrated as a sacrifice of Sati.  According to the story, when Prajapati Daksha jumped into the fire of sacrifice, Shiva's wife Sati committed self-immolation.  This festival is celebrated in memory of the same day.

 Modern form of Lohri

 * Modernism has changed the way of celebrating Lohri.  Now, modern attire and dishes have been replaced by traditional dress and dishes in Lohri.  People also rarely participate in this festival.

 * In Iran also celebrate the New Year festival in a similar way.  Fruits are offered by burning fire.  For example, Lohri celebrated in Punjab, Haryana and Delhi and Chahar-Shambay Suri of Iran are exactly the same festival.  It is considered a celebration of Iranian Zoroastrians or ancient Iran.
